A campaign against McDonald’s was broadened to over 200 separate investigations. This means almost half of all McDonald’s outlets in Russia are investigated on the basis of hygiene or finance.
The investigations began in August when Russia’s consumer protection agency suspended four of McDonald’s flagship restaurants over alleged hygiene violations. This decision was seen as a political response to Western-imposed sanctions. Since then over 200 probes have mushroomed.
“It is the typical approach you see when they are determined to bring a business to its knees,” said a food industry executive in Russia. “The clearest sign for that is that you have different probes at the same time – not just hygiene but also financial.”
