ECHR Yukos ruling says Russia must pay 1.9 billion euros

The European Court of Human Rights has awarded former YUKOS shareholders 1.9 billion euros ($2.54 billion) as a compensation for the unlawful seizure of company’s assets in 2003.

This ruling comes only two days after the arbitration court in The Hague awarded YUKOS shareholders 37 billion euros for Russia’s seizure of their company. The ECHR ordered Moscow to pay almost 2 billion euros after the company was bankrupted by – what the court termed – bogus taxes, broken up and sold off to other, state-owned, companies.
